Here's a Bit About Me...
I'm a graduate student at The University of Western Ontario,
studying Geo-Environmental Engineering. I am presently working towards
a Ph.D.. My thesis relates to modelling the clogging occurring in landfill
leachate collection systems due to biological growth, biologically driven
mineral precipitation, and suspended solids attachment. A computer program
has been designed which combines a model of biofilm growth with a relationship
between anaerobic activity and mineral precipitation (see Cooke et al., 1999).
These processes may be implemented in either a column experiment or field
system. The modelling of experiments demonstrating mineral precipitation
and biofilm growth in columns fed synthetic landfill leachate has been performed
with good results (Cooke, 1997). Further modelling of synthetic and real
leachate - fed columns, unsaturated columns, two dimensional flow mesocosms,
and field conditions will follow.
