Akshya Vasudev, M.D.

Dr. Akshya Vasudev is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Western University and a Consultant Geriatric Psychiatrist at the London Health Sciences Centre in London, Canada. He joined the Department of Psychiatry in September 2010 and was cross appointed to Medicine in June 2011. He completed his undergraduate training in Medicine (MBBS) in 1995, and post graduate training (MD) in Clinical Pharmacology in 1999 at Delhi University in New Delhi, India, followed by an MRCPsych with a subspecialization in Geriatric Psychiatry in 2010 at Northern Deanery in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.

Dr. Vasudev currently has two main areas of research interest: the neurobiology of late life depression particularly its relationship with cardiovascular factors & pharmacogenomics of drug response and adverse events. He is collaborating with a number of researchers at UWO in these areas. His publications have appeared in various peer-reviewed journals including the Cochrane Database Syst Rev, BJPsych, BMJ and J Affect Disord. Dr. Vasudev was awarded the Junior Investigator award by the International College of Geriatric Psychoneuropharmacology in 2009 for his contributions to research. He has been recently selected to be an ICES@Western Faculty Scholar for gaining further training in epidemiological research using large administrative databases held at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES).

In the clinic, Dr. Vasudev works along with members of multidisciplinary teams to help patients with late life affective disorders, those displaying behavioural and psychological symptoms associated with dementia, delirium and psychosis. He also offers consultation for neuropsychiatric patients with movement disorders and inborn errors of metabolism.
Dr. Vasudev loves to teach medical students and residents in Psychiatry and Medicine the complexity of relationship between aging, pharmacological interventions and psychological constructs. He was awarded an Outstanding Award for excellence in Post Graduate Education in Geriatric Psychiatry in 2014 by Western University.
