Have you been diagnosed with depression?
Are you over age 50?

If you have not previously taken the antidepressant mirtazapine (Remeron), you may be eligible to participate in this study. We are looking at how an individualís genes affect the amount of weight gained and other side effects experienced while taking mirtazapine.

This trial requires you to attend a baseline visit, with six more follow-up visits over the next six months. During the study we will assess your weight, and ask you questions regarding your mood.  Blood samples will be collected at the baseline visit, as well as at follow-up visits during weeks four, eight and twenty four (a total of four teaspoons of blood).

What will I gain?
You will likely receive no personal benefit from this study but the results will hopefully help doctors and scientists understand depression, its genes and its treatment better so that individualised treatment can be offered in the future to other patients.
