Francisco Suárez, S.J. (1548-1617):
Last Medieval or First Early Modern?

Franscisco Suarez

September 12-14, 2008
The University of Western Ontario
London, Ontario

Francisco Suárez has long been recognized as having an enormous influence on early modern metaphysics and physics (e.g. Descartes) and natural law theory (e.g. Grotius). He is, however, increasingly being studied as a natural and moral philosopher in his own right. This workshop is intended to promote and further this trend. The workshop's theme stems from Suárez's place as a transitional figure. Scholars have placed Suárez variously as the last Scholastic or the first precursor of Descartes -- the last medieval or the first early modern. We hope that by bringing together experts from both medieval and early modern philosophy a more synoptic, and more accurate, image of Suárez's philosophy, its achievement, and its relationships to his predecessors and to his successors will emerge. The workshop will cover each of the major philosophical themes of Suárez's corpus: metaphysics and natural philosophy (Disputationes metaphysica), psychology and philosophy of mind (De anima commentaries), and natural law theory (De legibus).
