2. Creating Groups (the "Cantus Series" tab)

Before series comparisons can be made, sets of data must be generated.

2.1 Select Feast Name

To begin the creation of a "group," enter a feast name in the "Feast" box. The available CANTUS feast names will display in a separate window upon clicking the "Feast List" button located below the fill-in boxes.
Copy and paste a feast name to ensure correct spelling, spacing and punctuation, and use single feast names only. The feast name must be complete with no wild-card characters in order to access the corresponding records from the CANTUS database.

2.2 Select Office

Use the pull-down list to select the CANTUS abbreviation for the office (i.e., M = Matins, V = Vespers, etc.). Refer to the "Description of Fields and Their Contents" page for a listing of the abbreviations.

2.3 Select Genre

Use the pull-down list to select the CANTUS abbreviation for the genre (i.e., A = Antiphon, R = Responsory, etc.). Refer to the "Description of Fields and Their Contents" page for a listing of the abbreviations.

2.4 Make Group

Click the button "Make Series Group." The new "Series Group" will appear in the table on the left-hand side of the page; scroll down if necessary. Each "Series Group" has a name which consists of the feast name, the office and the genre.

2.5 Details / Delete

The material at the top of the screen, consisting of manuscript sigla and CantusIDNumbers, is the data of each chant series. This can be viewed in a separate window by clicking the "Details" button beside the Group Name. The other button, obviously, deletes a Series Group.
