2. Responsory Series (the "SEARCH" tab)

The responsory-series comparative lists involve the listing of multiple, related responsory series initiating from a single series from a selected manuscript for a specific Sunday. Both the Sunday series and the manuscript source, which together are creating the "head series" for a comparison, can be changed with a few clicks of the mouse for different results.

2.1 Liturgical Occasion

Choose a liturgical occasion (i.e., "feast-day") from the pull-down list. The liturgical occasion will be a particular Sunday in either Advent or Lent. These days are identified by "A" for Advent or "L" for Lent, along with a number from either 1 to 4 for Advent Sundays, or 1 to 6 for Lenten Sundays.

2.2 Manuscript Source

To access the manuscript sigla whose series have been entered into this database, click on the links (to the right of the "Set Series and MS" button)"List of MS's" in alphabetical order either by siglum or by library.

2.3 "Set Series and MS"

Once the windows show the correct Sunday series and the desired manuscript, click "Set Series and MS." If there are no responsory CantusIDNumbers (CAO1, CAO2, etc.) showing below, then that material is either not included in that manuscript or is not yet entered into this database.

2.4 Creating Your Own "Head Series"

If you wish to compare a series of Matins responsories for a Sunday in Advent or Lent which has not been entered into the database, you can type in your own "head series" of CantusIDNumbers. If you do not already know the CantusIDNumbers of the chants in the series to be entered manually, you can find these on the CANTUS website or create your own if the chants are included in CAO.

2.4.i Chants in CAO

If the chant for which you require a "CantusIDNumber" is included in CAO, create a CantusIDNumber by placing two zeros before the four-digit CAO number. For example, CAO "6157" becomes CantusIDNumber "006157".

2.4.ii Chants Not Included in CAO

If the chant for which you require a "CantusIDNumber" is not included in CAO, retrieve the appropriate CantusIDNumber from the download file "'Master Table' of Texts and CantusIDNumbers" (in .xls format for Excel or .mdb format for Access), available on the CANTUS home page. If the chant is neither in CAO nor in the 'Master Table' for CANTUS, search the CANTUS database in the event that is it a very recent addition (and not yet included in an update of the downloadable 'Master Table'). If there is still no success in retrieving a number, it is probable that the chant has not yet been encountered in a CANTUS index and will, therefore, be a unique entry in the responsory-series comparison; use the CantusIDNumber "980000" as a space-holder.

2.5 Select "Compare Method"

Next, select the method of comparison from the pull-down menu. Click here for descriptions and examples of the "compare method" options.

2.6 Get Matches

The last step on this website page is to click the button "Get Matches."

2.7 Listings of Results

Results are returned with the closest affiliations at the top, in alphabetical order by siglum within groupings of sources with the same numerical results when compared against the source chosen to be the "head series".

For example, all sources with an Edit Distance of zero when compared against the selected "head series" will appear in alphabetical order by siglum. All sources with an Edit Distance of 1 will be listed alphabetically by siglum below those with a zero result, and those with Edit Distances of higher figures will be listed alphabetically below those, and so on for less similar records. Therefore, unless the siglum of your selected source for the "head series" begins with A, it will appear somewhere in the middle or end of the listing of sources with that numerical result.
