This concordance will find words within the incipits of all
the chants indexed by CANTUS, as well as words within the full chant
texts that we have gathered to date; the latter include all full chant
texts in CAO. You can search for one
word and
see the number of its occurrences within the database as well as its
context (i.e., its placement among neighbouring chants on the folio
side or page), or search for two words which both occur in a single
chant
or which occur separately in neighbouring chants (or even in multiple
chants which are further apart
from each other than the "neighbouring" distance of "2.") See the
HELP tab for more detailed instructions.
In the search
results, the full text given for most chant records is the standard
full
text matched by the CantusIDNumber. Although the full texts of
all chants have been confirmed by
the original indexers, only the first few words are recorded in the
CANTUS
incipit field. (The incipit field presents the reading of the
manuscript as closely as
possible but with spellings standardized so that searches yield
appropriate results.) The remainder of the full text, which is usually
shown within square brackets (if it has been entered into the
database), is drawn
from our "master chant" table. This amassment of full texts contains
only one version for each CantusIDNumber; for chants included in CAO,
this text is the one deemed "standard" by Hesbert, and for chants not
included in CAO, it is usually the first reading that was encountered
by CANTUS, but could also be that of Analecta
Hymnica or another modern publication. Thus, for portions of the
full texts which exceed the length of the incipit field, minor variants
such as differing verb tenses, cases, word orders, and
so on may be present. Users are encouraged to consult the original
sources for
such details. If square brackets do not
appear within a full
text in the search results, then the text that is displayed is the
actual reading of the manuscript for that chant with abbreviations
resolved.
