Volpiano Character Set - Basic Keystrokes: Volpiano Character Set - "Special Use" Keystrokes:

Entering musical data:
Begin with a clef (non-transposing treble clef is standard), add three hyphens (staff lines), and type lower-case ASCII letters to represent the pitches of a melody. After the last pitch of a complete melody, add three hyphens and a double barline ("4").
Spacing:
Enter three hyphens between words, two hyphens between syllables, and one hyphen between individual neumes which are sung on the same syllable.
Use of flats or naturals:
For CANTUS records, enter accidentals as a single character ("i", for example) in the strings of pitches.
NB: If printing a musical example, edit the string of characters by adding a note after the accidental (i.e., "ij").
CANTUS Records:
1) melodic incipit = the first pitches of the melody, i.e., those which correspond to the words of the 'textual incipit' field
2) full melody
Font sizes:
For printed examples, use 12 pt. text with 24 pt. Volpiano.
"Special Use" Characters:
Use upper-case ASCII keystrokes for smaller noteheads. These can be used to represent liquescents, quilismas, plicas or other types of inflected neumes. If submitting melodic records to CANTUS, please specify the usage of these smaller noteheads.
