Course Description
In its various embodiments (religious, literary, philosophical…), what can be termed as "mystical" has pushed the individual to the limits of the imaginable, and the imaginable beyond the limits of the world, into the transcendent or beyond it. This course endeavors to tackle the two main Western mystical traditions: the apophatic (or the negative), whose main representatives regarded the relationship and potential union between the individual and the universal outside of the paradigms of representation (the authors and theorists to be studied here are Plato, Plotinus, (Pseudo-) Dionysius the Areopagite, Meister Eckhart, Gregory Palamas, St John of the Cross, Angelus Silesius, Richard Crashaw, Pascal, Balzac, Kafka, Trakl, Simone Weil, Nabokov, Celan, Deleuze, Jean-Luc Marion, Kevin Hart); and the kataphatic (or the positive), whose main proponents considered the relationship between the individual and the universal under the sign of vision and representation (The Bible, The Koran, The Zohar, St. Francis, Dante, Loyola, St Teresa of Avila, Mme Guyon, Goethe, Rilke, Pound).
