LIS 525 - Network Tools Lab

Objectives

• To learn how to use common network tools.
• To learn how to interpret data produced by some network tools.
• To comment on the functionality of the tools.

NSLookup

• Use nslookup on panther.uwo.ca to determine the IP address and computer name of the machine running the FIMS SharePoint server (alias faculty.fims.uwo.ca).
• In your report, note the IP address of faculty.fims.uwo.ca and identify which part is the network number and which part is the host number, and what the class of the network is. (You can assume, in this case, that the original IP address scheme applies.)

Ping

• Use ping at the Command (MS-DOS) prompt in Windows to determine availability of at least three hosts outside North America that respond to pinging (many do not). (Use a geolocation service on the host's IP number to ensure it is, in fact, outside North America.)

  Note the time required for a packet to travel from your location to the remote host. Experiment with different packet sizes (tens of bytes to several thousands of bytes).

• In your report, note the IP addresses of the hosts and identify for each which part is the network number and which part is the host number, what the class of the network is (according to the original scheme), and the average time.

TraceRt

• Use tracert at the Command (MS-DOS) prompt in Windows to determine the network route between your workstation and publish.uwo.ca.
• Determine the network routes between your workstation and three locations outside North America.
• In your report, include screen captures or log printouts of each run of Tracert.
