  1. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 January 10. REPORTS DUE: none. SEMINAR: Introduction to the course. General criteria for software evaluation.
  2. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 January 17. REPORTS DUE: 2002 January 16, 8:30 am. PREPARATION: Choose a particular kind of software package that might be used for library and information applications; for example, integrated library system, database management, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics. Note also any problems you have with terminology. REPORT: (Required) Write a report of no more than 900 words outlining criteria, other than general software evaluation criteria, that you think would be useful in evaluating the specific kind of package you chose. SEMINAR: Discussion of criteria for selection of specific types of software. Initial problems with terminology.
  3. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 January 24. REPORTS DUE: 2002 January 23, 8:30 am. PREPARATION: Choose a type of software package that you would like to see acquired for FIMS. Examine secondary sources of information about a package or packages of this type. REPORT: (Required) Indicate which type of package you chose. Write a report of no more than 900 words consisting of the following: (1) a brief justification for acquisition of this type of package; (2) a discussion of the type, quality, and accessibility of the information available from the secondary sources. SEMINAR: Initial discussion of the type of package to be recommended for acquisition. Discussion of sources of information on software packages.
  4. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 January 31. REPORTS DUE: none. PREPARATION: Begin examining a database management or IR software package. SEMINAR: Demonstration and lab on Inmagic DB/TextWorks.
  5. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 February 7. REPORTS DUE: 2002 February 6, 8:30 am. PREPARATION: Continue examining a database management or information retrieval software package. REPORT: (Elective) Either a general review of Inmagic DB/TextWorks or Microsoft Access or a focused report on any database management or IR software package or packages. SEMINAR: Further discussion of database management and IR packages, including points raised in reports. Preliminary discussion of package to be recommended for acquisition.
  6. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 February 14. REPORTS DUE: none. PREPARATION: Begin examining a graphics or presentation software package. SEMINAR: Demonstration and lab on PowerPoint.
  7. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 February 21. REPORTS DUE: 2002 February 20, 8:30 am. PREPARATION: Continue examining a graphics or presentation software package. REPORT: (Elective) Either a general review of PowerPoint or Corel Presentations or a focused report on any graphics or presentation package or packages. SEMINAR: Further discussion of graphics packages, including points raised in reports.
  8. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 March 7. REPORTS DUE: 2002 March 6, 8:30 am. PREPARATION: Determine the package that you wish to recommend for acquisition and the package that you wish to recommend for weeding. REPORT: (Required) Indicate the name of the package that you are recommending for acquisition, its Canadian price(s) and supplier(s), licensing conditions, and its Windows 95/98 and network compatibility. Identify the package that you are recommending for weeding. In no more than 900 words, present evidence that you have gathered for these recommendations. SEMINAR: Determination of package to be recommended for acquisition and of packages to be weeded.
  9. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 March 14. REPORTS DUE: none. PREPARATION: Begin examining an HTML-related package. SEMINAR: Demonstration and lab on HTML editing capabilities of Corel WordPerfect 9.
  10. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 March 21. REPORTS DUE: 2002 March 20, 8:30 am. PREPARATION: Continue examining an HTML-related package. REPORT: (Elective) Either a general review of the HTML editing capabilities of Corel WordPerfect 9 or of Netscape Composer or a focused report on any HTML-related package or packages. SEMINAR: Further discussion of HTML-related packages, including points raised in reports.
  11. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 March 28. REPORTS DUE: none. PREPARATION: Begin examining a spreadsheet package. SEMINAR: Demonstration and lab on Microsoft Excel.

REPORT: (Elective) Either a general review of Microsoft Excel or Quattro Pro or a focused report on any spreadsheet package or packages. SEMINAR: Further discussion of spreadsheet packages, including points raised in reports.
  13. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 April 11. REPORTS DUE: none. PREPARATION: Begin examining a software package on which you have not yet reported and which has not yet been extensively discussed in this course. SEMINAR: John Fracasso on the FIMS LAN. Installation of, and experimentation with, package selected for acquisition, if available.
  14. DATE OF SEMINAR: 2002 April 18. REPORTS DUE: 2002 April 17, 8:30 am. PREPARATION: Continue examining the software package that you began examining last week. REPORT: (Required) Either a general review or a focused report on any software package on which you have not yet reported and which has not yet been extensively discussed in this course, plus full text or précis in HTML format. SEMINAR: Discussion of packages considered in final reports.
