Some of what it does	Extracts every word and every phrase up to a certain length that occurs at least a minimum number of times in a source text and that does not start or end with a stopword.	Incorporates the classic NEPHIS string indexing system, with some additional formatting features, including production of indexes in HTML format.	Assists in the writing of abstracts and other short summaries. Includes word and phrase extraction and various other capabilities.	Assists in creating, modifying, and printing out a thesaurus. Allows users to define their own link types and report formats. Includes a template with definitions of the standard SN, USE, UF, BT, NT, and RT relation types and alphabetical, short, and tree report formats.	Assists in human indexing of Web documents. Produces index displays in HTML form, including links to Web documents. Allows for automatic target extraction, target and link insertion, and production of tables of contents in HTML files and insertion of certain other HTML codes in plain text files.

(The self-extractors for these packages currently all require 16-bit support. In case of a "16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem" error message, consult the Microsoft help page at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767.)

(In Windows Vista, running the self-extractors as administrator is recommended. Running one of the self-extractors as an ordinary user typically produces the useless error message

(An alternative to running a self-extractor as a program is to change the extension to .zip, extract the contents, and run setup.exe in the folder containing the extracted files.)

(Using XP compatibility mode may also help with some problems.)

(In Windows XP and Vista, the applications are best viewed with "Windows and Buttons" set to "Windows Classic Style".)

(There are no specifically 64-bit versions of these programs, nor are there likely to be. On a 64-bit system, try running them as 32-bit programs. Should you be unable to do that for some reason, an alternative is to use the Java applications in the next section.)

(To run the programs, version 6.5 of the Java Runtime Environment seems to be sufficient. No special modifications have been included to deal with any quirks in Java runtime systems other than those provided by Sun; the programs may still be usable within such systems, but with the occasional workaround needed. Specifically, the Mac version of the runtime system has been reported as flubbing part of the new thesaurus creation routine in TheW; the recommended workaround is to unZIP and rename a copy of template.the from either thewj.jar or thewj.zip.)
