XRefHT32 - HTML Editing Window

The HTML Editing Window provides some simple editing functions for HTML files. It is especially designed to facilitate changing elements relevant to index generation in XRefHT32, namely, the title and meta-tagged keywords. It can also be used to facilitate creating entries in the XRefHT32 main list from words and phrases on Web pages.

The HTML Editing Window contains four editing areas: the URL area is at the top, the title area is at the left; the keywords area is at the right; and the HTML code area is at the bottom.

"File" menu

"New..."

This function clears any HTML code in memory.

"Open..."

This function allows you to open an HTML file for editing.

"Open URL..."

This function allows you to open a Web page for examination.

"Insert from..."

This function allows you to insert code from a file at the current insertion point in the HTML code.

"Save"

This function saves the HTML code to the current pathname.

"Save as..."

This function allows you to save the HTML code to a file that you choose.

"Save selection as..."

This function allows you to save the selected part of the HTML code to a file that you choose.

"Go" menu

This menu allows you to move back and forward through a brief history list of Web pages examined.

"Edit" menu

"Cut"

This function cuts the selected part from the active editing area.

"Copy"

This function copies the selected part from the active editing area.

"Copy plain text"

This function copies the selected part (or all, if there is no selected part) of the HTML code to the clipboard minus comments, tags, and character entity references.

"Paste"

This function pastes text from the clipboard at the selection point in the active editing area.

"Delete"

This function deletes the selected part of the active editing area.

"Select All"

This function selects all of the active editing area.

"Standardize"

If you have a thesaurus open in TheW32, this function changes any of the keywords that are non-preferred terms in the thesaurus into the corresponding preferred terms. The thesaurus' standardization threshold is used to identify links from non-preferred to preferred terms.

"Suggest keywords"

If you have a thesaurus open in a version of TheW32 dated November, 2001, or later, this function inserts in the keywords a list of preferred terms from the thesaurus that seem to match words or phrases in all or part of the text. If you have selected part of the text in the HTML code area, matches are looked for on words or phrases in that part; otherwise, matches are looked for on words and phrases in the whole HTML code area. In either case, words or phrases in HTML tags are ignored. The thesaurus' standardization threshold is used to identify links from non-preferred to preferred terms. If the number of possible matching terms is too large (> 10), terms with relatively few matches are eliminated.

"Insert in List"

This function inserts a new item in the list in the main XReHT32 window. The URL of the new item inserted will be the URL displayed in the HTML Editing window. If any text is selected in the active control of the HTML Editing window, that text will be translated into the term for the new item. Otherwise, the new item's term will be blank.

"Search" menu

"Find"

This function brings up a stardard "Find" dialog for the HTML code.

"Replace"

This function brings up a standard "Replace" dialog for the HTML code.

"Insert" menu

This menu provides functions for quickly inserting certain common HTML code.

It also allows you to insert a site map for either a local or a remote collection of pages linked (by relative URLs) directly or indirectly (by up to six steps) from a home page that you specify.

"Format" menu

"Anchored heading"

This function formats the selected part of the HTML code as an anchored heading, with a level and name that you choose.

"Table"

This function formats the selected part of the HTML code as a one-cell table.

"View" menu

"Preview"

This function calls up your default browser to render the contents of the current file.

"Font"

This function calls up a standard dialog that allows you to select the font used to display the HTML code edit box.

"Syntax highlighting"

This option toggles on and off automatic highlighting of tags in the HTML code edit box.

"Tools" menu

"Spell check page"

If the spell checker is installed, spell checks any text outside HTML tags in the code edit box. (If any angular brackets are not properly matched, a warning is issued, and no changes are made.)

"Thesaurus"

If TheW32 is running, this option switches to the TheW32 window, copying the keywords into the TheW32 clipboard.

"Extract phrases"

This option first copies all the plain text from the HTML code area; it then attempts to run ExtPhr32 or to find a running instance of ExtPhr32 and, if successful, has ExtPhr32 extract words and phrases according to the current settings. This works only with versions of ExtPhr32 dated May, 2004, or later.

Note that, if XRefHT32 launches ExtPhr32 and ExtPhr32 has a extpconf.txt file that specifies a stoplist without an explicit path, ExtPhr32 will look for the stoplist in the directory current in XRefHT32, not in the ExtPhr32 directory.

"Window" menu

"Indexing"

This function brings the main XReHT32 window to the front without closing the HTML Editing window.
