Artist Statements

Liz Kennedy

As an artist I have yet to commit myself to a specific medium, however conceptually I remain close to certain ideas. Working mainly in painting, drawing and sculpture, the importance of interior space and its relationship to recollection is the focus in my work.
I like to work with the passage of time and the corresponding perceptions, discussing the personal relationship one has with time and how memories define it. The representation of a point in time creates a strange connection with the audience, as my memories are transferred to the viewer. I strive to make the viewer connect personally to the work, creating an emotional experience, and attempting to induce nostalgia. I try to present the viewer with a situation that they can analyze and discus themselves. Trying to consider a complete view of the space I explore the relations between the spaces and what occurs in them. I also tend to use the removal of figures and human presence from the work to create and interesting overview on the overlooked. I focus on careful observation, and re-evaluating looking and seeing in my art practice because I am interested in using detail to create a narrative space.

The subject matter of my work is always personal, and in many ways a new form of autobiography. Conceptually, my creative expressions are evolving due to the greater understanding of the subconscious and Borriaud’s Relational Aesthetics.
Peter Pan Print Series, 2007 - Present, is an epilogue of role reversal depicting Wendy as the villain, and Peter in the role of the victim. This skewed Oedipus complex reveals a desire for my father and a resentment of my mother. Coincidentally my mother’s name is Wendy, which reveals the repressed feelings of the subconscious in my work.
Remembering Ross, 2011, is my latest large-scale oil painting that depicts a photograph I took when meeting my idol, Ross Bleckner. Mr. Bleckner not only gave me important advice about my career, but we also talked about issues that touched me on a personal level. This painting is framed and stylized to portray a memory that is also homage.
My autobiographical themes are reflective of relational viewing, hoping that the memory of the viewer will transcend my subject.
