Module 4 - Assignment
Web Site Creation

Overview

The purpose of this assignment is to create a web page using a web page editor.

Web Site
This web site should include 2 - 3 linked web pages, two or three font sizes, a horizontal line, a photograph, images from the Internet, and links to other web pages on the Internet.

You will therefore create 2 - 3 (or more) web page files, and link to several images. You will then have approximately 5 - 7 files (or more) and you have to send me these files.

Basic Requirements
The basic requirements for your web page (site) include:

  • Font  - colour, change of size,
  • Links  - links to other pages and return links
  • Link to 3 or more external educational web sites on the Internet
  • Images - a digital image from scanner or digital camera or downloaded from the Internet (check the size of the digital image - the memory size should be no bigger than about 200 Kb and preferably smaller)
  • Bulleted list - use for making a list
  • Horizontal Line  - to divide a section of your page
There should be smooth navigation from page to page on your site and also to external sites.  If you go to an external site on the Internet, you can design the link so you use the Back button on your Browser to return to your page, or open the page in a new window.

Recommended Software
There are many ways to create web pages.  These include using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher or another word processor and saving the file as a web page.   For this assignment, you are asked NOT to use this method.  You are asked to use a web page editor such as Dreamweaver (Ministry licensed), or Front Page.

You may however, create your web page in HTML if you are familiar with this language.

Do NOT use web sites that have a template for a web page created and you just fill in the text.  I want you to learn the construction from a blank page.

You must send me the files that you use.  Do NOT upload the files to your web site or upload information to a pre-designed web site and then send me the Internet address.  I do not want to visit an existing web site.  You must send me the individual files for your web site.  (If it seems I am stressing this point and the one about NOT using templates, I am).

Since a web page is viewed around the world, there are certain standards for coding.  This is HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).  HTML and the web page editors does not give you the same flexibility as a word processor, particularly when using images.  Be aware of this as you create your web page

Dreamweaver
I strongly recommend you use this software. This Ministry licensed software is an excellent program, and it is well worth the effort needed to learn it.  There is a tutorial on how to create a web site using this program in the course text.

Microsoft Front Page - the next best choice, but only if you don't have access to Macromedia Dreamweaver. There are two basic views in this program, the Normal view where you create and edit your web page, and the Preview view which displays your web page as it will appear on the web.

Warning!
As you create your web page, you will constantly switch between the editor and the browser or preview screen.  One common mistake is to forget to switch back to the browser after viewing your page and trying to edit in the browser.  As you become frustrated because your changes are not being accepted, you will suddenly remember this paragraph and say “Oh!”.  You may also say something else.

Image Links
Just because your web page opens on your computer, does not mean it will always open on a remote server (or my computer).

A web page is generally a small file (in memory size) since it consists mainly of text.  It does contain links to other files, e.g. photos, images.  Therefore, when you make this link, the file to which you link must be available in order for it to display.  A common problem when starting to design a web page is to create a link to a file on your computer in a different folder to your web page file.  This continues to work OK as long as you are running it on your system.  However, when it is uploaded to the web or used on another computer, the link to the file on your computer will not work and a blank rectangle (for an image) or a page "not found error "will be displayed.

To avoid this, make sure all links do not contain paths to drives on your system and that any images are included when you submit your assignment.  You should not have a link to an image such as   c:\My Photos\me.jpg      When I view this on my computer, your image (me.jpg) will be a file on my computer and I will not have this path    c:\My Photos\

You should have a folder called website and all files should be in this folder.

Remember to send all files to me.

Image Size
Photographs and other images in web pages should be relatively small in memory size.  Generally, they should not exceed about 200 Kb. You may need to re-size images using a photo editing program.  See my notes on Adobe Photoshop Elements in the course text on how to do this.  Other programs use a similar vocabulary and process.

Planning
It is very important that you plan out your web page carefully.  You are free to choose any educational topic for your web page.   Please do not create web pages about the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vince Carter, Eminem, The Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, etc.

If you have not designed a web page previously, then I suggest you follow the notes in the course text.

Create a folder called website on your hard drive for all your images and web page files (htm).

Locate your digital images save them in your web site folder.  Download any Internet images, but make sure they are also in your web site folder.

I suggest you work through the notes in the course text for web page design using Dreamweaver.  (You may want to go through them 2 - 3 times).

Web Site Name
The main page of a web site is usually named index.htm

To Submit Your Web Page
Use one of the four methods below.

1. Put the individual files in the drop box - this will be time consuming for you.

2. If you know how to zip files, then zip them and put the zip file in the drop box.

3. If you don't know how to zip files, I can help you and have a tutorial on how to do this.

4. Attach the files to an email and send them to my email address at floyd@uwo.ca    I will zip the files for you and return the zip file. You can put this in the drop box.

For the purposes of this assignment, this web page will be viewed by you and the instructor only.
