Another controversial issue in the syntax of Malagasy is the status of the subject.

Some linguists (e.g. Matthew Pearson) claim that it is in fact a topic as demonstrated in this example: "Alex, Sandy hired her," and therefore has very different properties from subjects in English.

Others (e.g. Lisa Travis) claim that it is a subject, but the differences between Malagasy and English arise from independent differences between the languages.
