Overall the assignment was well done. The goal of
critiquing information sources on the environment seemed to be
achieved. Though many of you said you do not use journal
databases much, there was clear evidence of some creative searching -
well done.
The average was 14 (73%)
The TAs put a lot
of time into grading the assignments and have included rather extensive
comments - please read the comments carefully before approaching your
TA if you have concerns.
Try to cut down on the amount of quoting. Summarize ideas as much as possible unless the writing is so poetic it has
to be quoted or you do not feel you can effectively summarize the
author's message. Avoid the appearance of using quotes to avoid
actually discussing the ideas at hand.
There seemed to be a
common assumption that science/academic journal articles are completely
unbiased and that whatever is written in them should be taken as
factual. Though you may not have lost marks, our lecture on science
reminds us that even academics have biases - e.g., the questions they
choose to answer and how they scope a propblem (which ineveitably
leaves things out).
Be sure to pay close attention to formal
writing style - for example, clear and accurate in-text sourcing.
Be sure to proof-read all assignments - for example,
sometimes reading drafts aloud to yourself can help catch things that
don't make sense OR have a trusted friend or family member read it
through.
Based on early reports about the midterm many students' grades will be going up, more on that next week...
