My teaching and research interests centre on nineteenth- and twentieth-century North American business, cultural, economic, and sport history. I am currently a PhD candidate in History at the University of Western Ontario and will be defending my doctoral dissertation, “Hockey Capital: Commerce, Culture and the National Hockey League, 1917–1967,” in June 2008. The dissertation explores the interplay of commerce and culture in the hockey industry, and is the first academic history of the first five decades of the NHL based on primary sources. I hope to have a manuscript ready for publication in 2009.

My interest in business and cultural history was first aroused while working on my master’s thesis, a history of the Canadian piano manufacturing industry. I hope to continue this work and flesh it out into a full production and consumption history of pianos in Canada.

So far, I have presented the results of my research at over a dozen conferences and published them in several chapters and articles. There will be more to come. See my curriculum vitae (pdf).

As a teacher, my goal is to help students develop their skills in critical reading, writing, analysis, and also to awaken in them a spirit of self-directed learning about history that will be the foundation for their lifelong navigation of an increasingly diverse and complex world. See my Statement of Teaching Philosophy (pdf) for more details on my constantly evolving ideas on effective teaching.
