The five aggregates (skandhas)

The elements of life or what we are made up of.

  1. Form (rupa)
  2. Feeling (vedana)
  3. Volition (samskara)
  4. Perception (samjna)
  5. Consciousness (vijnana)

 

 

Feelings arise when there is contact between the six internal organs and the six external objects.

Parts of the body      Senses

  • Eyes                 - Sight
  • Ears                  - Sound
  • Nose                 - Odor
  • Tongue             - Taste
  • Body                 - Touch
  • Mind                  - Mental acumen

 

 

1. Form (rupa)

  • Earth & Water
  • Fire & Wind

2. Feeling (vedana)

  • Pleasant
  • Unpleasant
  • Neutral

3. Volition (samskara)

Is the response of the will to the six external objects- senses.

4. Perception (samjna)

These are related to the six external objects -senses.

5. Consciousness (vijnana)

This grasps the characteristics of the six external objects- senses.

  • Visual consciousness
  • Auditory consciousness
  • Olfactory consciousness
  • Gustatory consciousness
  • Tactile consciousness
  • Mental consciousness
