Dr. L.A. Piché

Nutrition and Metabolic Processes Fall 2004

COURSE SUMMARY

OBJECTIVES: To gain a clear understanding of the metabolism of the major nutrients.

To use this knowledge to analyse the biochemical nature of normal and abnormal (disease) metabolic processes.

PREREQUISITES: Foods & Nutrition 235a/b, 344a/b (formally 243a/b) and Biology 280a or by permission of the Department.

APPROACH: An integrative study of nutrient metabolism at the advanced level. Utilization of the major nutrients emphasizing regulatory mechanisms at the organ and cellular levels under various physiological conditions.

Lectures (3 hrs. per week) based on Textbooks, Case Study Discussions and Assigned Readings.

Students will be asked to prepare a written summary of a Case(s) and present the Case(s) to the class (written summary due Wednesday, February 14, 2004 by 1:00 pm).

TEXTBOOK: Harper's Biochemistry (25th ed) R K Murray, D K Granner, P A Mayes & V W Rodwell, Appleton & Lange, Stamford CT, 2003.

GRADING: Case Studies .......................................................... 30%

Mid-Term Test (Wed Oct 20, 7 - 9:30 pm) ..................... 35%

Final Examination(TBA)............................................ 35%

NOTE: THE POLICY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN ECOLOGY IS AS FOLLOWS:

1. Attendance at class and laboratories is mandatory.

2. Assignments are due at time and date noted. The mark will be reduced by 20% on assignments submitted within seven (7) days of the due time. Assignments submitted after seven days will not be accepted for marking.

3. There will be no make-up mid-term test for a student who has missed a test except with documentation to show a confirmed personal illness (prior to exam) or a death in her/his immediate family. - 2 -

IT IS ALSO UNIVERSITY POLICY THAT:

1. "A student may be debarred from writing the final examination for failure to maintain satisfactory academic standing throughout the year".

2. "Any student who, in the opinion of the instructor, is absent too frequently from class or laboratory periods in any course, will be reported to the dean (after due warning has been given). On the recommendation of the department concerned, and with the permission of the dean, the student will be debarred from taking the regular examination in the course".

UWO 2003-04 Calendar, p. 32.
