Dr. Mohan Merchea -- Personal Info


Dr. Mohan Merchea graduated from G.R. Medical College, Gwalior, India in 1964. He was a commissioned officer in Indian Army Medical Corps of for more than ten years and as an Ophthalmologist for more than six years, before immigrating to Canada in 1974.

He did his residency training in Ophthalmology from 1974 to 1979 at the University of Western Ontario. He is a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and a Diplomat of American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been in private practice since January 1980 in London, Ontario, Canada. He is at present Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario, where he runs Refraction and Contact Lens Clinics. He is actively involved in teaching refractive surgery to residents in Ophthalmology, at the University of Western Ontario. His special interest is Anterior Segment diseases, Small incision Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery, Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma Surgery and Strabismus Surgery. He has an extensive contact lens practice and specializes in all kinds of lenses including bifocal contact lenses.

Dr. Merchea is an active participant in outreach projects in Ontario, establishing an outpatient eye clinic at Strathroy-Middlesex General Hospital, and also in India, where he spends a few weeks a year training ophthalmologists in the newer techniques of cataract surgery and lens implantation, and performing surgery on low-income patients.

He has had extensive training in Refractive Surgery at various centers in North America. He has performed PRK, Lasik and PTK surgery for myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. He has trained a number of Ophthalmologists in laser surgery in Canada, US, India and Europe.

He has himself performed in excess of 10,000 Lasik procedures and has performed custom ablation on dissatisfied patients/complicated cases with excellent results.

He has experience in using Nidek EC-5000, Meditek MEL-70 Laser, Visx Smoothscan Laser, Lasersight LSX and Chiron Technolas Lasers. He is a certified Nidek Excimer Laser Physician Trainer. He has been performing custom ablation on complicated cases with MEL-70 at Icon Laser Center in Windsor, Ontario.

He has presented numerous papers on Refractive Surgery at various international meetings on the use of various Lasers and microkeratomes. He is at present involved in various research projects on refractive surgery.

He is Associate Medical Director of ICON Laser Center in London, Ontario, Canada. He also runs an Excimer Laser Center in Chandigarh, India.
