“James Joyce’s Ulysses in Hypermedia” began life when the University of Pennsylvania Press asked Michael Groden to consider doing a hypertext version of Ulysses for them, and it became a real project in Summer 1996 after Groden produced a successful prototype of the project at the Summer Program in Multimedia for Higher Education, co-sponsored by the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University and the Voyager Company. In 1997 the project received a three-year grant from the University of Western Ontario’s Academic Development Fund, and in 1999 and 2000 Groden was an Artist-in-Residence at Eyebeam Atelier in New York.

In 2002 “James Joyce’s Ulysses in Hypermedia” was merged with an ongoing project involving the Ulysses manuscripts at the Poetry/Rare Books Collection, University at Buffalo, State University of New York. The new project that resulted was called “Digital Ulysses: An Annotated Hypertext and Manuscript Archive.” In 2003 “Digital Ulysses” received a grant from the Mellon Foundation to create a Web-based model of the project, and a version of the Proteus episode of Ulysses was produced.

The editors of “Digital Ulysses” were unable to reach an agreement with the Estate of James Joyce for permission to use the texts of Joyce’s works in the project, and as a result work on “Digital Ulysses” (and by extension on the earlier “James Joyce’s Ulysses in Hypermedia”) is suspended as of the end of the Mellon Grant in January 2004.
