8) HYPERMEDIA JOYCE STUDIES |
| Edited by Sheldon Brivic, R.L. Callahan, Jane Yellowlees Douglas, Michael Groden, Cheryl Herr, R. Brandon Kershner, and Thomas Rice |
Hypermedia Joyce Studies is a new journal of criticism and scholarship on Joyce's works published exclusively on the Internet. HJS will publish all its articles electronically on the World Wide Web, and its form of publication will make it different from and a complement to other outlets for Joyce scholarship. HJS will take advantage of the unique opportunities the Web offers for hypertext writing (nonlinear writing in which screens of text are connected by links, often with several links leading in different directions from a single screen) and for articles that incorporate multimedia elements (illustrations, video, sound).
The second issue of HJS, and the first under the current editorial board,
was published in March 2000, and is available from Rob Callahan's "Work
in Progress" site (click on the section labeled "Sufficient for the
day is the newspaper thereof") or directly.
The first issue of HJS was published in summer 1995 under the editorship of
Lawrence James, Alan Roughley, Rob Callahan, and Julian Croft. That issue is available
from the "Archives" link on the HJS
site or directly.
The editorial board eagerly seeks articles. HJS welcomes works representing
any critical approach to any of Joyce's works. In order to make use of the Web's
capacities for hypertext and multimedia, the board is particularly interested in
articles written in hypertext and those that incorporate visual or sound elements;
in other words, in articles that could not be published in a print journal except
in a drastically different form. It is also interested in short pieces which bring
to light archival discoveries or offer concise readings of specific elements within
Joyce's works.
Authors need not have any experience in constructing hypertext or in HTML programming,
although guidance is available from the editors for those who want to learn these
things. Authors should, however, be aware of the technological and stylistic characteristics
of Web publishing as they create their articles.
Inquiries and submissions should be directed to the editorial board via email (address:
hjs@2street.com).
