Doug Wells

 

With regret, we announce the passing of our great friend and patron Doug Wells. His significant influence on all levels of rowing (local, provincial, national and international) will continue to be felt for decades to come.

Canadian rowing lost a major benefactor when Doug Wells died on Monday, June 7th. Doug was, along with his father Sam, a founder of the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association. A rower for ten years and later vice-president and captain at the Argonaut Rowing Club, Doug also contributed to the Don Rowing Club. In recent years, his financial support helped significantly to develop infrastructure at the Doug & Sam Wells High Performance Centre in London.

 

His contributions extended beyond rowing to a volunteer leadership in a number of causes, including Variety Village, the Ontario Society for Crippled Children, Ontario Speech Foundation, Metropolitan Toronto Hockey League, Canadian Hearing Society and Easter Seals. He was a recipient of the Ontario Medal of Citizenship.

 

Doug was eighty-five.

 

WELLS, Douglas Samuel O.M.C. _ Peacefully, at Cummer Lodge, Toronto on Monday, June 7,2004. Fondly remembered by his family and many friends, Douglas will be sadly missed by Shirley and Clary Fraser. Visitation will take place in St. Michael and All Angels Church, 611 St. Clair Ave. West (at Wychwood Ave.), Friday 12 to4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service in the church Saturday 11 a.m. Cremation. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Easter Seals Foundation would be appreciated.

Sam is the father of Doug Wells and is a founding member of the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association.
