Professor Mark Workentin was born in Chatham Ontario, but grew up in Timmins, Ontario. After completing high school he attended Western where he obtained his B.Sc. and then completed his Ph.D. in 1992 at McMaster University in Hamilton under the direction of Professor Willie Leigh. He joined The University of Western Ontario as an Assistant Professor in 1995 after three years as a Research Officer at the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences at the National Research Council of Canada. Dr. Workentin was promoted to Associate Professor in 2000 and Full Professor in 2005. He was a Univeristy Faculty Scholar from 2005-2007. He is a multi award-winning university teacher and holds one of the largest NSERC Discovery Grants at Western. His multidisciplinary research program in the areas of mechanistic organic chemistry has ramifications in the mode of action of biological relevant molecules and materials science. His research program has earned over a million dollars in individual research funding, and has contributed to over 15 million dollars in collaborative grants. He served on the executive of the Organic Division of the Canadian Chemical Society, including a term as Chair and the Organic and Biological Division of The Electrochemical Society. Within the University he has served on numerous departmental, Faculty and University committees. The latter included the Senate Committee on University Planning, the Senate Committee on Academic Policy and Awards, and the Senate Review Board Academic.
