INSTALLING OF WINDOWS 2000

January 31/2002

Problems with C: Drive

  • Tried installing Windows 2000 on C, but the error Out of memory, get the message
  • on the internet and sent them a comment saying that the solution did not work.
  • Installed the Windows 2000 on E:  and formatted it with NTFS during installation.

How to install  and join to a Forest:

  •   Use the CD-ROM and run a clean installation.
  •   Follow the screen setup.
  •   Press (ESC) at the prompt for the drive to put it on, because you want to continue.
  •   Select E:\Currently Member Server 2 GB
  •   Format Current E: with NTFS, F to format, do not leave as is.
  •   Once done formatting, the system reboots directly into the E:\Windows Server Setup

Selection, and choose E:

  •   Choose Per Seat License, because you can go from per seat to per server, but not

the other way around.

  •   Computer Name = Server04
  •   Administrative password = password  (same as Warrens for the forest03)
  •   Networking Services, select this, and leave the CD in the computer.
  • ERROR:  At least one service has failed during system start-up. Use Event

Viewer log to see details.

  •   I checked the Event Viewer, but it was looking for the NIC card.
  •   Install the D-Link card 538
  •   Go into My Computer/Properties/Device manager/TCP/IP Properties and install the

driver from the A:  browse the diskette.

  •   My computer address = 10.10.1.4

DNS IP address = 10.10.1.3

Alternate = 10.10.1.100

  •   DNS name = Forest03.com
  •   Try pinging the four above addresses, and if you get a replay then the TCP/IP Network

card is indeed working.  And it is.

  •   At the run command, type dcpromo.exe (enter)
  •   At the run command, type adminpak.msi (enter) Administrative tools

February 1, 2002

RESULT:

·        C Drive, is still a problem, it was analyzed, defragmented, and am now running checkdisk.

·        E Drive now has a clean copy of Windows 2000 Server and I can see Warren and the rest of the forests.

·        D: Drive has a copy of Windows 2000 Server, and is the srdvc04 copy, which is the Server copy.

·        Another solution. I thought I could make Drive C in the Disk Manager unactive, and make D

·        active, and then I could Fdisk C and reinstall, but with Windows 2000 you must have C as the active drive.

February 4, 2002

PROBLEM SOLVED:

·          In Windows 2000 Server in class we were covering Disk Quotas, and noticed that Drive C

had a restriction of 1GB disk quota.  So it did not matter who logged in from the Administrator

to the user, you would not be able to go any further than 1GB.  That is why I was having the

error out of space.

·          Press the Esc key prompted for the Drive name, choose C:

·          So I installed another copy of Windows Server on Drive C, or WIN2KSA.

·          Licensing = Per Seat

·          Computer Name = Server04

·          Administrator (password = password, for install, change later)

·          Name = server04.corp.com

·          Load the D-Link for the drivers, change the Boot.ini file, and make C the WIN2KSA folder.

·          Load DNS

·          Dcpromo

·          Adminpak.msi

·          TCP/IP set the static addresses 10.10.1.4, and default gateway.

·          Screen resolution 800 X 600 and 16 bit color, clear resolution.

C:  Drive (empty, too hard to manage 2 partitions of Windows 2000 Server on the same hard drive.

Removed WINNT folder and updated the Boot.ini file to

reflect the change.)

D:  Drive (Windows 2000 Server)  NOT ACTIVE, DELETED February 11, DNS problem, must

wipe and reinstall.    Use the following instructions for documentation and informational purposes!

  • NTFS, WINNT
  • Service Pack 2 (W2KSP2/I386/Update.exe)

Address:  10.10.1.4

  • ENSURE that DNS is working properly!  At the command prompt type nslookup, and it responded forest04.
  • Try in the Monitoring tab in DNS to run a test, it failed, and passed, I am unsure why it is not working.  But an going to install Active Directory anyway, some of the other students had success with it, so I am going to try it.
  • Run dcpromo (at the run command), and ensure that the DNS is working before you go ahead and do this.  Use the Administrator account with the logon account password of g00dluck.  New forest, New tree, and New domain.  Forest04.com, this will be in mixed mode.
  • Run adminpak.msi (at the run command) to load up some more administrative tools.

  • Load Office for the students on Exam week, and ensure that the boot.ini file is working to reflect the changes.  Changed, and put the office on Professional, so that the students cannot change Active Directory.
  • Run the additional administrative  (Browse the CD Support/Tools/setup.exe), select the custom installation, and use the default options and folder locations given.
  • View the Log files, to ensure that the Dcpromo worked properly, and make sure that there were no errors.
  • View the Entire Network, and see if you are configured properly.
  • Use the ping command to see if the connectivity is correct.  Everything should still be working okay.
  • Look in My Computer Properties, and My Network places and ensure that everything is configured properly.

NEW INSTALLATION FOR WINDOWS 2000 ADVANCED

SERVER on D: Drive:            (April 18, 2002)

REASON:

I am part of Warrens system, so we must use the same logon password and names.  Whenever

either of us change something on the system it is replicated to the other machine immediately.

1.      No need to fdisk.  Just go into C and view my CD-ROM, and press Setup for the

Installation to start.  You will be prompted to install on D.

2.      D Drive is NTFS and 4GB the rest of the space.

3.      Licensing = Per Server = 25

4.      Administrative Password = password

5.      Setting = Typical

6.      Workgroup

Once Installation Done, do the following for Security Purposes:

1.      Change the administrator password = g00dluck+!  (adminpyeg”one)

2.      Add Back Doors, Wesley and Alexandra, pa55word

3.      Change the Boot.ini file to boot to C before D.

4.      Change the Startup and Recovery to boot to C first.

5.      Try logging on with the new users, to test that works.

6.      I dcpromo then I am added to Warrens computer. I become a child of his domain, so

e is the administrator that must enter the password to run Dcpromo, not Mr. E.

7.      Create a batch file in notepad and call refresh.bat:

                        secedit^/refreshpolicy^machine_policy^/enforce

Add the batch file to the main screen and create a shortcut for it.

8.      In Domain Controller Security Policy/Local Policies/Audit Policies select “audit

ccount logon events” and “Audit Logon Events” to success and failure.

9.      In Domain Controller Security Policy/Local Policies/User Rights Assignments select

eny access to this computer from the network”\Domain Users.

Add trouble maker such as server 15 and 16.  They will be the only users in the classroom

            that will be denied access.

10.  Possibly rename the administrator account, but if there is a secure difficult password, then

11.  no-one can crack into it.
