PHOTOMOSAIC OF ASTEROID 4 VESTA This is a photomosaic of asteroid 4 Vesta. Vesta was observed by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1994 and 1996. Observations are described in: Zellner, B.H., et al., 1997. 'Hubble Space Telescope Images of Asteroid 4 Vesta in 1994' (Icarus, 128:83-87) and: Thomas, P.C. et al., 1997. 'Impact Excavation on Asteroid 4 Vesta: Hubble Space Telescope Results' (Science, 277:1492-1495). Peter Thomas kindly provided the shape model. The images for this experimental map were scanned from versions published in Sky & Telescope, V. 94, No. 5, p. 18, 1997 (later mapping will be done from the original image data). The images were reprojected onto a grid produced from the shape model. The map contains some artifacts and variations in brightness from image to image, and cannot be used for albedo estimates. Its purpose is to show the locations of bright and dark markings, not their correct relative brightness. As with all conformal (true shape) projections, the scale in these maps varies, increasing from the centre to the outer edge. The map projection is described in: Stooke, P.J. and Keller, C.P., 1990. "Map Projections for Non-Spherical Worlds / the Variable-Radius Map Projections", CARTOGRAPHICA, V. 27, No. 2, pp. 82-100. This version of the file, with labels intact, is in the public domain.
