2003 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: The Mustangs started their pre-season exhibition series defeating University of Rochester (2-0) and Rochester College (3-0). The Team hosted and won the Gold Medal at the Old Four tournament defeating Queen’s (1-0) and McGill (1-0), in the final. The Mustangs entered regular season play with Paco Barnett and Jeff Russell as the team’s Co-Captains. The Men’s Mustang soccer team finished first in the OUA West Division for the second year in a row. The team had a regular season league record of 7 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties (7-1-2). The team scored 16 goals for and allowed only 6 in regular season play. In the play-offs, the Mustangs defeated Laurentian (2-0) in quarter-final play, McMaster (1-0, Penalty Kicks 4-2) in semi-final action and Waterloo (3-0) in the OUA Final. The team did not allow one goal in the OUA play-offs and Roberto Cabellero recorded 3 shut-outs. The Mustangs scored 24 goals and allowed only 10, in 16 regular season and play-off games. The team finished with 8 shut-outs. The Mustangs advanced to the CIS National Championships as the 2003 OUA Champions, following a 3-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors. This is Western’s 5th OUA Championship in the last eight years and 7th appearance at Nationals, in the last 16 years. The Mustangs tied Alberta (1-1) and defeated Concordia (2-1) in pool play. They missed playing for the Gold Medal game by a goal differential of one. The Mustangs lost the Bronze medal game to Montreal and finished 4th at Nationals. (More Details) The leading goal scorer for Western was Hayden Laird with 6 goals. Co-Captains for the Mustangs were Paco Barnett (2nd Team OUA All-Star) and Jeff Russell (CIS Tournament Eleven All-Star). Roberto Cabellero, Chris Stefanazzi, and Paul Speakman were selected as 1st Team OUA All-Stars. Roberto was also selected as a 1st Team CIS All-Canadian and Chris was a 2nd Team CIS All-Canadian. |
