Attention Recruits:

In the past eight years the Western Ontario Soccer Mustangs have won five OUA Championships (1966 -1999 & 2003) and back-to-back CIAU National Championships (1998 & 1999)! The Mustangs won the Gold Medal in 1998 (Montreal) and 1999 (Victoria), Silver in 1996, Bronze in 1993 and finished fifth in 1997, at the CIAU National Championships. Throughout the 90's the Mustangs have been one of the most dominant university soccer teams in Canada. Our goal is to continue the success into the new millennium. In 2003, the Mustangs placed 4th at the CIS National Championship held in Montreal. (http://www.universitysport.ca/e/m_soccer/index.cfm). In 2003, Roberto Caballero Jr. was selected as a 1st Team OUA All-Star and a 1st Team All-Canadian. Chris Stefanazzi was selected as a 1st team OUA All-Star and a 2nd Team All-Canadian. Paul Speakman was selected as a 1st Team OUA All-Star and Paco Barnett was a 2nd Team OUA All-Star. Mike Potts, a recent alumni, won the Joe Johnson Award for two consecutive years in 1999 and 2000. This award is presented to the top soccer player in the CIAU (now changed to CIS). This is the first time a soccer player has won the MVP Award twice in Canadian Interuniversity Sport history. He was also awarded the Howard-Mackie award as the Most Valuable Player in all CIS sports in 1999. The soccer program has graduated many players that have achieved recognition as OUA 1st & 2nd Team All-Stars, CIS All-Canadian 1st & 2nd Team All-Stars, and Provincial and National MVP award winners.. We are in the process of planning our annual exhibition tour to the United States in the last weekend of August. We bring our top recruits on this exhibition tour. Our training camp will run during the last week in August. Players selected to the Mustang squad will travel to compete in the Old Four Tournament with Queens, McGill and Toronto, during the Labour Day weekend. The regular season commences in early September. The University of Western Ontario offers excellent academic programs in many areas. The campus is spectacular and self-contained in the northern part of the city of London. We will mail out to interested student-athletes a viewbook which contains admissions information. Residence is guaranteed for all first year students. The book contains information on Western's Academic Programs and Faculties and Scholarships, as well as Awards and Financial Assistance. Please contact me if there is any other information you require. We are losing some players to graduation and are interested in recruiting top level student-athletes to maintain and improve on the strength of our program. We have a very strong program at Western, as our record indicates. Thank you for showing an interest in Western and the soccer program. Please contact me at 1-519-631-3770 during the day, or email me at rbasacco@uwo.ca for further information regarding the soccer program or the excellent academic programs offered at the University of Western Ontario.
