2002 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
The Mustangs started their pre-season exhibition series playing games against the University of Rochester (0-1) and Roberts Weslayen (1-2). The team won the Silver Medal at the Big Four Tournament hosted by McGill University, defeating Queen's (1-0) and losing the final to the host McGill (0-4). The Mustangs entered regular season play with Paco Barnett and Jeff Russell as the team's Co-Captains. The Men's Mustang soccer team finished first in the OUA West Division regular season with an 8-0-2 (win-loss-tied) undefeated record. This was the 3rd time since 1971 that a Mustang team had an undefeated regular season record (1979 & 1999). The team lost a very hard fought play-off game versus Toronto. The game was tied at the end of regulation time 1-1 and neither team could score the golden goal in overtime. Toronto eventually won in penalty shots. The team allowed only 8 goals in 11 regular season and play-off games and recorded 5 shut-outs. Chris Stefanazzi and Ryan Leigh were selected as 1st team OUA All-Stars. Chris was also chosen by the coaches as the OUA Central North/West conference MVP. This earned Chris CIS 1st Team All-Canadian All-Star status. The Mustangs had 4 other players selected to the 2nd team OUA All-Stars. They were Roberto Caballero, Paco Barnett, Jason Carrelas and Glen Duerr. Glen led the OUA in regular season scoring with 11 goals in 10 games. He scored his 11th goal versus Toronto in the play-off game. Rock Basacco was selected as the OUA Central North/West Conference Coach of the Year. The Mustangs held their annual soccer banquet November 24th and the following soccer awards were handed out: Most Valuable Player: Ryan Leigh Rookie of the Year: Paul Speakman Best Fit Award: Joe Jesseau Golden Boot Award: Glen Duerr Coaches Award: Paco Barnett |
