Gold Medal Championship Final:
Mustangs Earn Back-To-Back Soccer Titles.
In a very exciting championship final, the Western Mustangs held onto their
crown with a 1-0 win over the Alberta Golden Bears. Though the score was
tied at zero at the half, there were several good scoring chances. The
rain held off for the gold medal final and the skill of both teams shone
through.
However, in the second frame it was the Mustangs who came out strongest.
And with their solid play, they earned a corner kick early in the half that
resulted in the eventual game winner. Xavier Patural half-volleyed the
cross into the top of the net in the 46th minute, and that was it for the
scoring, and all Western would need for the victory.
Unfortunately for Alberta, they were unable to equalize and were forced to
settle for a silver medal for the second straight year. Congratulations to
the Wesern Mustangs, 1999 CIAU Men's Soccer Champions.
