Mustangs Clinch Berth To Gold Medal Game

Montreal -- Midfielder Xavier Paturel snapped a 1-1 tie with only 12 minutes remaining to give the University of Western Ontario Mustangs a 2-1 win over the University of Quebec at Montreal Citadins on Day 2 of the CIAU men's university soccer championships at McGill's Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday. The win gave Western a 2-0 record in Pool A and a berth in the gold medal game on Saturday.

The Citadins played without Talal Idelbi, their leading scorer, who was mistakenly kept out of the lineup by coach Bertrand Coudraye, who was under the impression that his all-star forward was suspended as a result of three yellow cards incurred during the Quebec conference playoffs. However, two of the yellows did not count towards the rule as they had been transformed into a red card.

Paturel, a senior from London, Ont, was named as Western's Game MVP and increased his tournament-leading goal total to three in two games.

The Citadins opened the scoring in the 50th minute on a marker by sophomore midfielder Jean Robert Meriser of Montreal. The Mustangs evened the score only five minutes later as Ree San, a third year forward from London, Ont, put one past keeper Nicolas Pinto.

The Mustangs, who were called nine times for offside, outshot UQAM by a 6-5 margin and improved their current winning streak to five games. Keeper John Dreliozis of London, earned the victory in net for Western.

Jacob Jacques, a midfielder from Haiti, was selected game MVP for UQAM. The Citadins will play next against UPEI on Friday the 13th at noon EST. It will be a must-win game for both teams as the winner will advance to the bronze medal game.
