Western's road to retain their 1998 CIAU title in intact, as they took their first game against the University of Victoria Vikes 1-0. Ree San scored the winning goal in the 87th minute.

The game was a see-saw affair throughout the match. The Vikes had two shots headed off the line in the final minutes. This was the first goal UVIC goaltender Dominic Butcher allowed all season in Centennial Stadium. The shut-out for the Mustangs was by Rob Lave.
