Objectives:
Students will read selections
from Plato's Symposium in the original Greek and consolidate their
mastery of Attic Greek grammar and syntax. We will consider the place of the
Symposium in its historical context and in the ancient Greek literary
tradition.
Prerequisites:
Greek 222 (formerly Greek 020) or the permission of the department.
Texts:
Plato's Symposium, text and commentary (2 vols.) by Gilbert P. Rose. Bryn Mawr, 1981.
H.G. Liddell. Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon. Oxford 1959.
Both of the above will be available at the Book Store at Western.
Evaluation:
1. 10% Quizzes (approximately
every two weeks, translation and grammar questions)
2. 15% Participation and preparation
3. 20% Homework assignments (may include prose composition, a short presentation)
4. 20% Midterm (translation and grammar questions, Thursday, November 3)
5. 35% Final Exam (translation, grammar questions, and some short written answers)
