Sampling

Definition:

The process of selecting items in order to retain a representative portion of the collection in the event that the whole cannot be kept in its entirety.

It is a valid option if the archival institution cannot afford to preserve or manage the whole of the acquisition.

e.g. annual ledgers, case files, etc.
