Difficult to access and use because of linear configuration 

Generally produce poor paper copies (but this is improving)

Film can be scratched, therefore need for an archival master copy

When duplicated, each successive generation loses resolution

Colour representation is weak

Requires a special physical storage environment to insure longevity
