Record Group, Manuscript
Group and Fonds
- Definition: Fonds represents the whole of the documents (regardless of form or medium), created and/or accumulated, or used by an individual, family or corporate body. It is a term that is becoming increasingly used in Canada.
- In American parlance, the term 'fonds' is rarely used. Rather, collections are divided in name by "record group" (public or corporate materials) or "manuscript group" (personal papers).
- For an administrative entity to be the creator of a fonds it must: have a legal identity, an official mandate, a defined hierarchical position, be capable of conducting most of its business without reference to a higher authority and have a defined and recorded organizational structure.
Example A: A Corporate Fonds
