As a guideline, maintain organization of series by function whenever possible. This guideline applies much easier to record groups
or a fonds that is corporate or organizational in nature (e.g. the Mother's Allowance Division may have had a complete file drawer filled with financial records and another complete file drawer filled with correspondence from mothers seeking benefits)
In private papers, series organization by function is more difficult because
original order is often non-existent or obscured. In such cases you can impose
an order. A common order is by type of material (e.g. photographs,
correspondence, maps). Here are some examples of common types of material.
Another approach is by function/activity if discernable. The latter is preferable as it gives insight for the researcher as to the activities of the creator.
