The Baltimore Oriole is one of my favourites with its brilliant bold colours. They prefer to nest in American Elm trees but because the Dutch Elm disease destroyed most of these trees, the oriole has adapted to using cottonwoods, sycamores and other tall trees. They can live up to 11 years, live a solitary life or in pairs, grow to be 20-26 cm in length and have a wingspan of 26-30 cm.

Voice:

The Baltimore Oriole has a melodious, loud and clear song in which they sing several short notes in a series, and the lengths of its song often varies.

Watch to hear a simple Baltimore Oriole song:

Nesting:

Baltimore Oriole are quite good at weaving grass to make their round-bottomed basket shaped nests which hang near the end of branches.

Feeding:

They are especially fond of caterpillars but often pick insects and spiders off of leaves and branches as well. They also sip nectar and eat fruit.
