Current Graduate Students
Ben Beall
Graduated with his B.Sc. in Marine Biology from The University of British Columbia and completed his MSc at UWO (”Nutrient availability and sedimentation in marine phytoplankton”). He has continued here, working an a thesis concerning in vivo microbial growth rates.
Katrina Iglic
Completed her B.Sc. (Honors) in Ecology and Evolution at UWO and is now working towards her M.Sc., studying the effect of trace metal limitation on reactive oxygen species formation in Symbiodinium spp.
Katie Dickinson
Completed her B.Sc. in Zoology and is now examining the role of copper in regulating competition among harmful algal bloom species.
Recent Honors Student Projects (20 students since 1990. 2002-2007):
2007 Julianna Jy - Allelopathy in Heterosigma akashiwo.
2007 Elio Cino - Measurement of ROS in phytoplankton cells.
2006 Katrina Iglic - Iron-regulated microcystin production.
2006 Sean Doran - A flow cytometric analysis of the nutritional status of marine flagellates.
2005 Tera Speers - An iron-based competition model among marine flagellates.
2005 Hayley Martin - Catalase activity in marine phytoplankton.
2003 Aaron Stein - Probe assisted flow cytometric (FCM) analysis of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS)
accumulation in marine phytoflagellates.

2003 Rebecca Dalton - The use of the flow cytometer to determine the iron status of marine phytoplankton.
In the "Lost, but Not Forgotten" Department, graduates that have moved on include:
As a student at the University of Winnipeg, Liza McClintock studied the impact of UV exposure on aquatic organisms through a project supported by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. She now focuses her energy on the Pseudo-nitzschia ECOHAB project (and training her cat) and has completed her M.Sc. on harmful algal blooms in the Pacific Northwest. While teaching at UWO she remains part of our sea-going crew.
Bill Bjornsson completed his M.Sc. thesis on the regulation of toxin production in Heterosigma akashiwo, a harmful algal species in 2007.
Monica Klein completed her M.Sc. in 2006 on exoenzyme production in Heterosigma.
Crystal Ling completed her M.Sc. in 2006 on the production of hemolytic compound by Heterosigma.
Fadi Hamadani was a 2004 summer students and participated in SEED-II, an iron enrichment experiment in the western sub-arctic Pacific Ocean. He is attending medical school at the University of Ottawa.
Anna Jung was a visiting graduate student from Germany. As part of her thesis requirements she created a thesis titled: “Isolation of Heterosigma cysts and their distribution in B.C. sediments”.
Monica Klein completed her M.Sc. studies wit a thesis titled: “Iron induced extracellular enzymes in marine phytoplankton”.
Lisa Pickell is now a Ph.D. student at the University of Maine (still working with us on the DOE project). Her M.Sc. thesis was “Fundamental differences in the systems of iron acquisition among marine phytoplankton”.
Mike Twiner is completing his Post Doctoral Fellowship at the Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research, Charleston, SC.
Rana El-Sabbawi is now a Ph.D. student at the University of Victoria.
Heather Macrellis was a M.Sc. student at the University of California, Santa Cruz (major supervisor was Ken Bruland) but was a visiting student in our lab and a colleague at sea. She is presently a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington.
As a mother of twins, Kelly (Murphy) Marci balances life as Mom and an elementary school teacher in the Toronto area.
Neil Rooney has started a PDF at the University of Guelph, after completing a Ph.D. in Limnology from McGill University.
Steve Wilhelm remains a good collaborator as a Associate Professor of Microbiology at the University of Tennessee. After completing his Ph.D. in our lab, he headed south to the University of Texas and then followed his PDF supervisor to UBC.
