Storage
Systems and Enclosures (General)
-
Storage
furnishings such as cabinets and shelves should be made of non-combustible,
non-corrosive materials such as stainless steel, anodized aluminum, or steel
with a powder-coated finish.
-
Avoid
wooden shelves as they contain lignin, peroxides, and oils that can offgas
or migrate to the photograph
-
Baked
enamel cabinets are also known to offgas unless properly cured during their
manufacture
-
Avoid
enclosures made from unprocessed woodpulp paper, glassine, or polyvinyl
chloride (PVC)
-
Avoid
products made from coloured papers as they can contain unstable inks or dyes
that will bleed onto photographs
-
Overall,
the best general method of housing photographs is to provide several layers
of protection: sleeves to folders to document storage boxes
