The Promise
of the
Digital Classroom
- to expand the relevance of archival repositories within
society
- to begin to grow a records literate as well as information
literate audience that is aware of the bureaucratic, political, social and
cultural evidence as found in primary documents
- to promote the role of archivists as active participants in
communicating our cultural heritage
- to take advantage of the technological and financial resources that are
being allocated nationally for the application of information technology in
the classroom and for educational reform
- to promote the archival profession as an educational/career choice
(wishful thinking!)
Quality digital classroom sites will include the following characteristics:
-
The presentation of supplementary material for
schools and teachers (specifically a lesson plan)
-
The presentation of supplementary materials for
students (inclusion of visual and/or textual documents)
-
They will provide an allowance for interaction
between students and archives staff OR teachers OR educational groups of any
level
-
They will make an effort to integrate experiences
of 'real' visits to archives and the educational web site
-
They will focus on the provision of non
curriculum based learning experiences and support of life-long learning
activities (not just a strict focus on the content, but rather using the
content as a vehicle to develop broader analytical skills that young students
will hopefully utilize throughout their lifetime)
