Research Interests
History of opera (1600 to the present) and of musical theatre
(operetta to rock opera): the
interrelationship of music, text and
drama, and the place of musical theatre in a variety of contexts,
including those of the work as first created (musical, theatrical, literary, philosophical,
psychological, socio-economic, historical,
intellectual, and cultural) and those of the work
as recreated for
a modern audience (current narrative, reception and sociological
theories).
Specialist in 18th-century opera, particularly Mozart and Metastasian opera seria.
