History of opera (1600 to the present) and of musical theatre (operetta to rock opera): the interrelationship of music, text and drama, and the place of musical theatre in a variety of contexts, including those of the work as first created (musical, theatrical, literary, philosophical, psychological, socio-economic, historical, intellectual, and cultural) and those of the work as recreated for a modern audience (current narrative, reception and sociological theories). Specialist in 18th-century opera, particularly Mozart and Metastasian opera seria.
