Project Overview

Purpose of the Study: The main purposes of this study will be to explore the differences in stress levels between 100 full-time and 100 part-time nurses (both male and female with an age range of 20-65 years of age) and to determine if any relationship exists between the major questionnaire instruments for work and life stressors and salivary cortisol, a potential biomarker for stress.  Our study is intended to address two key issues.  Firstly, we will examine a major staffing variable of relevance to nursing (full-time versus part-time), and secondly, we will be providing information about possible physiological effects of stressful conditions that nurses may be exposed to.  A better understanding of the consequences of stress in the work environment could lead to the development of more effective intervention strategies to improve nurses' health and well-being, job satisfaction and reduce stress at work.  Research of this nature could help inform programs designed to assist in the attraction and retention of nurses, and important consideration in light of the current shortage our health care system now faces.
