Post Discharge Infant Nutrition Clinic
The Nutrition Clinic is located in room B3-064 at St. Joseph’s Health Care, London, Ontario, Canada. It is held every Thursday afternoon and provides nutritional support for post Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) discharge preterm infants and their mothers.
The Nutrition Clinic is a research study being conducted by Drs. Orlando da Silva and Doris Yuen, along with Michelle Carr RN, IBCLC and Cindy Ulrich, RD.
Drs. da Silva and Yuen are Neonatologists in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, Ontario, Canada. www.niculondon.ca
The Nutrition Clinic is funded through a research grant from the Academic Medical Organization of Southwestern Ontario (AMOSO). http://www.londonhospitals.ca/departments/medical_affairs/geninfo/afp/amoso.php
Through the Nutrition Clinic, the care team will follow NICU graduates (residents of London and Middlesex County and <35 weeks gestation) and aims to examine the experience of mothers who are supplying breastmilk to their preterm infant after discharge.
NICU graduate infants will be followed at 1 week post-discharge from the NICU and monthly, until 6 months of age, post discharge. The clinic collects data on the infant’s weight, length and head circumfrence and type of feeding he/she is receiving at each visit. Mothers have an opportunity to address any concerns or problems they may be experiencing with breastfeeding or breastmilk pumping/supplementation at each visit.
The objectives of this clinic include determining the breastfeeding rate and nutritional status of preterm infants, providing support to mothers with lactation difficulties and increasing long term breastfeeding goals for infants. |
