Research
Over the past many years Dr. da Silva has contributed to the dissemination of neonatal/perinatal knowledge in his home country of Brazil. He has participated in many seminars, conferences, lectures in Brazil to bring advanced knowledge to a number of physicians that would not have otherwise access to North American expertise in field of Neonatology. As a clinical epidemiologist he has also contributed to training of graduate students as thesis supervisor/co-supervisor/examiner within the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Western Ontario.
In 1992 he helped design and implement a Neonatal Database in the NICU at St. Joseph’s Health Care London to capture all admissions. This comprehensive data collection has allowed for accurate centre specific data on neonatal morbidity and mortality. This has permitted better counseling of expectant parents with locally derived rates of various morbidity and mortality for our high-risk neonatal population. In addition to auditing, this data can be linked to obstetric data and a number of research projects have been possible using perinatal/neonatal data from our center.
Currently, Dr. da Silva is organizing and implementing a Breastfeeding/Nutrition Follow-up Clinic. This clinic will mentor mothers and babies through breastfeeding challenges post-discharge and monitor breastfeeding rates of preterm infants in addition to optimizing nutrition support of this vulnerable population who have been discharged from our NICU. |
