This canopy bed was designed around an existing
antique bed. In order to make the bed stable, I had to design a frame for
attaching the fabric.
Once this was constructed and attached to the
existing bed, the wood was ready to be finished. I used several gold
leafing techniques and drybrushing applications to come up with the final
effects.
The next step is adding all of the fabric in
order to create a luxurious and romantic atmosphere.
There are three types of fabrics used in this
Canopy Bed. A "butter" colored demask is used on the duvet cover
and backdrapes. A "cranberry" colored silk is used as the the
main topper for decorating the frame of the bed. The third fabric is a
muted floral tapestry (also used for the blind and the drapery). This
fabric adds accents to the bed by shirring onto a wooden dowel, and then
the dowel is attached to the wooden crown moldings on the frame of the bed.
The Cranberry silk flows around the top of the
bed as a topper and also the back of the bed as an elegant backdrop. I also
wanted to finish the top of the bed, so I antiqued 2 dowels and mounted
them on the frame of the bed. Next, I draped the fabric over these dowels
which covers up any exposed wood from the frame of the bed.
The final touch is the addition of all of the
custom pillows and a bed skirt. Another added feature is overhead lighting
concealed within the top of the bed frame.
