Anne Short and James Montgomery had the following children:

1. John Montgomery, born 1828 who emigrated to New York City to work in his Uncle John Short's dyeing business. He later established his own dyeing business in New York City (Manhattan) at 353 Hudson but lived at 287 Sherman, Jersey City, NJ.
The 1880 US Census, Precinct 4, District 4, Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey, NA Film # T9-0783, Page 235C, reveals John Montgomery, wife Martha and daughter Fannie, age 19.

Fannie Montgomery married David Schenck Updike, a New York City lawyer.

2. James Montgomery, born c 1827, married Margaret Niblock. They had a son Robert, and a grandson Robert, born c 1904 and two daughters, Jane and Isabella.

3. Margaret Montgomery, a jeweller, born 1825, married Andrew? Irvin and lived in Williamsburg, Dundas County, Ontario, Canada. They had the following children according to the 1881 census: David, born 1859; Annie, born 1861, who married Thomas Hill, a blacksmith and lived at Boucks Hill, Ontario; Jane, born 1864 and John, born 1865.

4. Stuart Montgomery, born 5 May 1833, married Eliza White, daughter of John White of Castleblaney. They emigrated to New York and then to Kingston, Ontario. They had the following children: Emma, Robert and Marion. See #11. Robert Montgomery below.

5. Short Montgomery, born 1837, emigrated to Novi, Oakland, Michigan where he can be found in the 1880 census with his wife Mary J., 38, and family Maggie J., 20; Stewart, 15; Elizabeth, 12; Alexander, 7; Joseph, 5.

6. Jane Montgomery, born c 1840, married William McClelland

7. Joseph Montgomery, 1846 - c1913, emigrated to Michigan, then Kingston, Ontario, then Oscoda County, Michigan. The following can be found in the 1881 census of Napanee Town, Lennox County: Joseph Montgomery, 35 born in Ireland, dyer and scourer; wife Annie, 30, born in Ireland; Annie, 11, born in USA; Stewart, 8, born in Ontario; Lizzie, 5, born in Ontario.

8. Anne Short Montgomery, born 5 Aug 1843, died Jun/Jul 1923 married, in 1862, Alexander Francey born 7 Aug 1842, died in Highland Township, Michigan, 11 May 1912. They emigrated to New York City about 1868. They then moved to Hamilton, Ontario, then Oscoda County, Michigan, then Highland, Michigan. They had the following children: Martha Francy married Joseph Churchill; Annie Francy married John Thompson; Emma died in infancy; Edith died in infancy; Margaret Jane (Jennie) Francy married 1) 5 Ap 1893 William Clark and 2) Robert Hutchins; Nina Francy married Charles Grierson; and Mary Elizabeth Francy married Walter Hoyes.

The obituary for Alexander gives the following children: Mrs. (Martha) Joseph Churchill of W. Branch, Mrs. (Margaret Jane (Jennie)) Robert Hutchings of Clyde, Mrs. (Mary Elizabeth) Walter Hoyes of New Hudson and Mrs. (Nina) Charles Grierson of Conde, SD.

9. Thomas Montgomery, 1845 - 1912, married Mary Graham, born 1845 - 1929, of Tyholland Parish. He remained on the farm at Cashel, County Monaghan. Thomas was the author of a late 19th century letter which provided many clues to the relationships of the Cashel Shorts and Montgomerys.

10. William Montgomery, who was adopted can be found in the 1880 census of Petaluma, Sonoma, California, born in Ireland of Scottish parents, 47, dyer; wife Margaret, 46 born in Ireland and a child Anlrogene, 4, born in California.

11. Robert Montgomery, 1847 - 1926, emigrated to Kingston, Ontario, Canada and married Eliza White, widow of Stuart Montgomery. The 1881 census of Kingston, Ontario, established the following: Robert Montgomery born in Ireland, 37, dyer; wife Eliza, 35, born in Ireland; Emmy D., 18, born USA; Robert A. 15, born USA, painter and Marion, 14, born in Ontario, children of Stuart Montgomery and Eliza White; Florence A., 12; Samuel S., 9; Wallace H., 7; Mabel G., 4 born in Ontario, children of Robert Montgomery and Eliza White.

12. Alexander Montgomery, born 1849, emigrated to New York to work in his Uncle John Short's dyeing business. Alex Montgomery, according to Samuel Stewart Montgomery’s letter of c1933, set up a still in John Short's dyeing business and when John Short found out there was big trouble and Alex Montgomery left.
The 1880 US Census, New York, New York (Manhattan), New York City-Greater, New York, NA film # T9-0867, Page 401D, reveals Alexander Montgomery, dyer and wife Margaret also born in Ireland in 1849.

13. Eliza Montgomery, born 1852, married William Gamble.

A grandaughter of James and Anne Short Montgomery, Margaret Montgomery, married Charles Short whose parents have yet to be discovered.
