As part of all academic programs in occupational therapy, students must complete a significant number of fieldwork hours in various types of settings and areas of practice . The World Federation of Occupational Therapists demands a minimum of 1000 fieldwork hours for a program to be recognized as graduating qualified occupational therapists. Accredited occupational therapy university programs take responsibility in ensuring that these sites in which their students complete their fieldwork provide the learning opportunities necessary to allow students to develop the necessary competencies for practice. A critical element of this placement process, is the evaluation of the student's performance and learning. The Competency Based Fieldwork Evaluation for Occupational Therapists (CBFE-OT) is an instrument designed for just this purpose. The CBFE-OT is a measure that can be used for any level of fieldwork and within any placement area. Based on 7 core competencies for practice, the measure is easy to understand, user friendly and applicable in any setting. The scale is set on a developmental progression that is theoretically grounded. In addition to indicating a midterm and final rating on the competency rating scale, the fieldwork educator is provided a section within each competency for mid term and final comments. Integral to the instrument is a learning contract associated with each competency, which provides a way for the student to integrate his/her personalized learning objectives evaluated for each of the competencies.
In addition to the 7 competencies, the fieldwork educator indicates an overall rating for the placement. Suggestions for ongoing student development are presented to allow the student to develop goals for future learning. The Competency Based Fieldwork Evaluation for Occupational Therapists has an evaluation manual that specific information on the construction and use of the instrument and a glossary of terms.
