Linguistics 101: Languages of the World
Instructor: Dr. Strang Burton
Instructor Review: This course has been taught by Dr. Burton since September, 2009. It has not been taught by any other instructor since then. Dr. Burton is a reliable, approachable, and kind-hearted. Going to his office hour or asking him questions after class is very beneficial.
Description: A survey of the linguistic map of the world, examining how languages are genetically classified and how different languages evolve. Principles underlying different writing systems and the decipherment of historical documents. Issues of languages in contact, minority language endangerment, language death and the role of English as a world language. Recommended but not required for an honours, major, or minor in linquistics or speech science.
Personal Reflection: This course is regularly offered in fall and winter terms. One section per term. It was never offered in the summer term until the summer of 2015. This course is offered in the upcoming summer term in 2016. Please note the demand of the course is very high. It usually gets full on the first day of registration. For this course, the syllabus, lecture slides, and midterm/final study guide do not get changed a lot from term to term.
